Course objective:
The subject deals with theoretical principles of motor vehicles and their main mechanisms. It also explains functional properties of the individual mechanisms and points out an important connection between theory and reality. It looks into the common structural configuration of motor vehicles, new trends in quality improvement of operational parameters (incl. the ecological ones), in motor vehicles reliability and safety and emphasizes the importance of the application of new modern control systems for cars.
 
Course methods: Schematic pictures, interactive video, real examples of automobile parts, basic calculations of automobile dynamics
 
Course content:
1.Automobile history, basic parts of an automobile, automobile conceptions, basic vehicle specifications. (allowance 2/1)
2.Automobile legislation, development of a new automobile, automobile testing. (allowance 2/1)
3.Running reliability of an automobile. Energy analysis of an automobile, piston combustion engines. (allowance 2/1)
4.Working cycles of piston combustion engines, regulation of power and running conditions. (allowance 2/1)
5.Basic division of piston combustion engines, efficiency, engine cooling and lubrication. (allowance 2/1)
6.Basic parts and parameters of piston combustion engines. (allowance 2/1)
7.Alternative fuels, electromobile and hybrid fuel. (allowance 2/1)
8.Wheels, tyres, vehicle driving stability, electronic stability systems. (allowance 2/1)
9.Wheel suspension, axles and driving control. Automobile suspension, springs and absorbers. (allowance 2/1)
10.Braking system, brakes design, braking distance. (allowance 2/1)
11.Vehicle safety, car body structure, safety components, safety testing of vehicles. (allowance 2/1)
12.Biomechanics of injury, biomechanics criteria. (allowance 2/1)
 
Learning outcomes and competences:
After completing the course, student:
 
-Will calculate the basic problems from vehicle kinematics and dynamics and automobile aggregates
-Will define the basic division of vehicle engines and describe their parts
-Will describe the basic automobile parts and explain their function, recognise the main phases of the new car development
-Will identify the active and passive safety elements of a vehicle and define biomechanics injury criteria
