Course objective:
The aim is to acquaint students with descriptive statistical methods, introduction to probability calculus and principles of theory of estimation and hypothesis testing.
 
Course methods: One lecture in two weeks, seminars weekly. Calculators are used at seminars. Students get acquainted themselves with statistical software (Statgraphics)during solution of projects consisting in application of descriptive statistical methods to their own real data.
 
Course content:
1.Descriptive statistics - basic concepts. (allowance 1/2)
 
a.Classifications of variables.
b.Classification of data.
c.Handling sums.

2.Descriptive statistics - charactetistics of location. (allowance 1/2)
 
a.Different types of averages: arithmetic, harmonic, geometric.
b.Modus, median.

3.Descriptive statistics - charactetistics of variability. (allowance 1/2)
 
a.Range. Interquartile and decile range.
b.Variance, standard deviation.
c.Coefficient of variation.

4.Descriptive statistics - percentiles. The use of a calculator. (allowance 1/2)
 
a.Usage of quartiles, deciles.
b.Statistical functions of a calculator.

5.Presentation of semestral works - descriptive statistics. (allowance 1/2)
6.The first continuous test. Introduction to the probability calculus. (allowance 1/2)
 
a.The first continuous test (descriptive statistics).
b.Classical and statistical definition of probability.
c.Basic rules of the probability calculus.

7.Discrete random variable. (allowance 1/2)
 
a.Probability and distribution function. Mean and variance.
b.Binomial distribution.

8.Continuous random variable. (allowance 1/2)
 
a.Density function, distribution function, quantile, mean and variance.
b.Normal distribution.

9.Processing data from surveys. Point and interval estimation. (allowance 1/2)
 
a.Types of surveys. Sample characteristics.
b.Point and interval estimation of the population mean.
c.Point estimation of the population variance.
d.Point and interval estimation of the population proportion.

10.The second continuous test. Interval estimation. (allowance 1/2)
 
a.The second continuous test (probability calculus, interval estimation).
b.Confidence interval for the population total and for the total number of units.
c.Sample size determination.

11.Hypothesis testing. (allowance 1/2)
 
a.Formulation of hypotheses.
b.Type I and type II errors, significance level, rejection region.
c.One-sample tests of the mean.
d.One-sample tests of the population proportion.

12.Hypothesis testing. (allowance 1/2)
 
a.Testing equality of two means.
b.Testing equality of two population proportions.

 
Learning outcomes and competences:
After completing the course, student will be able to:
 
-Will be able to define and clarify basic concepts from the theory of probability and apply the normal distribution model
-Will be able to generalize survey results, i.e. to estimate population parameters or verify hypotheses about them
-Will be able to choose and apply suitable methods of data classification, summaries and presentation
-Will be able to list and calculate numerical summaries of data sample and clarify their properties

Course completion:
Evaluation: Course grade will be determined on the basis of the following: class presentation (10%), two continuous tests (2x15%), final test (examples and theoretical questions 50%), oral exam (10%). At least 20 points have to be received during the semester. To pass the course successfully, students must achieve at least 30 points in the exam.
Only official formulas and a calculator are allowed to be used in the exam.
Grades:
100-90 - excellent
89 -75 - very good
74 -60 - good
less then 60 - failed
 
Support for combined/distance forms of study:
Seminar project elaborated in Word, possibly with some oral commentary. Calculations and charts can be performed in Excel.
