Course objective:
The aim is to make students acquainted with basic statistical tools used in quality control.
 
Course methods: Lectures and seminars once in a fortnight. Project with assigned data (Pareto analysis,statistical process control, process capability analysis). The order of themes may be different in the combined form of study, see learning support in the information system. Midterm test in the combined form within 2. tutorial or in another agreed term.
 
Course content:
1.Basic tools. Pareto analysis. (allowance 2/2)
 
a.Classification and summarization of categorical variables.
b.Considering importance of causes by means of scores
c.Pareto principle

2.Statistical process control. (allowance 2/2)
 
a.Principles of statistical process control. Types of control.
b.Control by variables. Control chart for average and range or standard deviation. Chart for individuals and moving ranges.
c.Properties of control charts.

3.Process capability. (allowance 2/2)
 
a.Inherent and allowable variation.
b.Well known capability indices.
c.Verification of assumptions.

4.Statistical process control (allowance 2/2)
 
a.Control by attributes. Chart for number nonconforming. Chart for fraction nonconforming.
b.Chart for nonconformities. Chart for nonconformities per item.

5.Midterm test.
Seminar work.

6.Acceptance sampling (allowance 2/2)
 
a.Principles of acceptance sampling. Types of sampling.
b.Properties of acceptance plans, operating characteristic.
c.Process steps of acceptance sampling by attributes.

 
Learning outcomes and competences:
After completing the course, student will be able to:
 
-will be able to explain the basis of statistical process control, choose a suitable type of the Shewhart chart for a given case, apply the chart and interpret the results
-will be able to express the quality level of a process by means of capability indices
-will be able to choose and apply a single attribute acceptance sampling plan
-will be able to identify the most important causes of problems through the Pareto chart
