Course objective:
To learn students how to interpret the financial literature and financial press to the broad public, how to recognise the function of financial institutions, how to demonstrate the balance sheet view on financial instruments, how to express the nature of financial instruments and how to explain the impact of fiscal, monetary and macroprudential policies on macroeconomic variables (GDP, inflation and employment).

Course content:
1.Real and financial sector (allowance 1/0)
a.Financialization, financial market complexity, economic substance over legal form, erosion of clients’ protection on financial market

2.Balance sheets of sectors and categories of financial market (allowance 1/0)
a.Balance sheets of sectors, categories of financial market, savings and investment

3.Financial institutions (allowance 1/0)
a.Commercial banks, credit unions, central bank, investment firms, insurance and reinsurance undertakings, management companies and investment funds, pension management companies and pension funds

4.Function, definition and extinction of money (allowance 1/0)
a.Function of money, money supply measurement, how money are created and extinct, where money are created and extinct, how money are created and extinct

5.Payment systems (allowance 1/0)
a.Basic terms, payment between clients of the same bank, domestic payment system, cross-border payment system, payment cards

6.Monetary and macroprudential policy (allowance 1/0)
a.Classical monetary policy, quantitative easing, macroprudential policy

7.Foreign exchange policy (allowance 1/0)
a.Foreign exchange rate, foreign exchange rate regimes, foreign exchange interventions, balance of payments

8.Fiscal policy (allowance 1/0)
a.Impact of taxes on economy, structure of tax revenues in Czech Republic, sales tax versus value added tax, public-private partnership

9.Debt market (allowance 1/0)
a.Legal forms of debts, redeemability od debts, debt of households, debt of non-financial enterprises, debt of government institutions, impact of debt increase on economy

10.Equity market (allowance 1/0)
a.Limited liability, limited liability company and joint stock company, asset stripping, share classes, corporate governance, investment in shares, share price inflation, impact of equity market on economy

11.Pension systems (allowance 1/0)
a.Categories of pension systems, pay-as-you go pension system, pension funds pension system, pension system in EU, pension system in Czech Republic

12.Economic and financial stability (allowance 1/0)
a.Definition of economic and financial stability, financial stability, Japan – example of a stable country

Learning outcomes and competences:
After completing the course, student:
-Will explain the impact of financial markets on macroeconomic variables (GDP, inflation and employment)
-Will express the nature of financial instruments
-Will give examples of the balance sheet view on financial instruments
-Will interpret the financial literature and financial press to the broad public
-Will recognize the function of financial institutions
