Course objective:
Main aim of the course is to acquaint students with selected methods and models for managerial decision making support and help them in real applications in their managerial practice.
 
Course methods:
Lecture notes followed by seminars.
 
Course content:
1.Introduction. Decision-making process. History of operations research, classification of disciplines, typical applications. (allowance 1/2)
2.
Introduction to linear programming. Formulation of typical linear programming problems and their mathematical models. Solving problems and interpretation of results. (allowance 2/5)
3.
Distribution problems. Transportation problem, container transportation problem, generalized distribution problem, assignment problem, travelling salesman problem. (allowance 2/4)
4.
Introduction to graph theory. Optimization problems on graphs. (allowance 1/3)
5.
Project management. CPM and PERT. (allowance 2/3)
6.
Introduction to inventory models. Deterministic inventory models - EOQ and POQ. Stochastic inventory models. (allowance 2/4)
7.
Waiting line models. Classifications of models. Single-server exponential waiting line model. Optimization in multi-server exponential waiting line model. (allowance 2/3)
 
Learning outcomes and competences:
After completing the course, student:
 
-Will apply mathematical modelling procedures to more complex decision-making and optimization tasks
-Will interpret and break down obtained results, including the verification and validation of the model used
-Will select, on the base of data analysis, the most appropriate tool for obtaining an effective solution
-
Will understand and explain the principles of optimization in typical and special managerial tasks
