Course objective:
The aim of the course is to develop the skills that students need for their academic study programmes in English. Not only will students be equipped with the specialist vocabulary and language they require but also key academic skills such as listening to lectures, speaking in seminars, note-taking, summarizing, and writing an argumentative essay.
Course methods: The content of the course will be introduced and practiced during the lessons and additional self-study tasks will be assigned mainly as homework an clarified later in class.

The key skills and language are enhanced by real life practice situations in class. Writing skills are practiced mainly through home assignments.

Learning outcomes and competences:
After completing the course, student will be able to:
-Will communicate clearly and concisely in English orally at a professional and academic level using appropriate language constructions, formats and register to suit the purpose and audience
-Will compile, formulate and produce correctly written and spoken business and academic texts
-Will critically evaluate, judge, justify, and support an argument
-Will recall, identify, define, and recognize specific subject vocabulary and grammar without error

Course completion:
The requirements for a successful completion of the course are:

* active participation (meaning not simple attendance but actual involvement in class) - 5%
* progressive assessment (aimed at vocabulary and skills, evaluated through mini tasks throughout the semester) - 20%
* term paper (argumentative essay on a topic related to the units covered throughout the module) - 40%
* presentation (essay defense) - 25%
* mid term paper (focused mainly on assessing the grasp and use of the taught vocabulary and grammar) - 10%

The midterm test must be passed sucessfully (min 60%) to be able to submit the term paper!
