Course objective:
This course will introduce students to the analysis of those rights and duties of undertakings that arise from competition law of the European Union. Teaching, in class discussion and presentations will be based on relevant case-law (both EU and CZ) as well as on practical examples and legal textbooks.
 
Course methods:
This course will be taught in blocs containing a lecture as such, then a discussion in class and also individual tasks focused at solution of competition cases. Students will be required to study at home and to prepare and present their own individual presentation on an assigned topic (once during semester).

Learning outcomes and competences:
After completing the course, student:

Will analyze practical situations of distortion of competition, will distinguish and connect their factual and legal side, will draw conclusions for their solution in accordance with EU law

Will define and explain the basic sources and concepts of EU competition law, will express in his/her own words their practical meaning

Will explain the ban on cartels, will illustrate it on the cases dealt with by the Court of Justice, will apply it in practical situations of corporate practice

Course completion:
One short written test during the semester focusing on the learning outcomes listed as LOs 1,2, i.e. importace and consequences of competition law sources, principles and notions of competition law for firms, especially in cases of cartel collusions. The test carries the 15 % weight in the final assessment. Another 15 % of the final assessment can be gianed by preparing an individual presentation on an assigned topic presented in class. In combined/distance studies there is, due to a limited number of meetings, 1 mid-term test with 30 % weight in the final assessment. Final exam combining written part with subsequent oral discussion focusing the learning outcomes lisetd as LOs 2,3,4, i.e. analysis and solution of case-situations and evaluation of firm's practical compliance with competition law. Final exam carries the 60 % weight in the final assessment. Participation to at least 80 % of in-class activities (incl. taking part in discussions) represents 10 % of the final assessment. Each requirement contributing to the final assessment should be successfuly completed by at least 40 %.
 
Support for combined/distance forms of study:
Set of basic text and documents provided to students upfront via SAVS information system plus readings distributed by lecturer during the semester. Powerpoint presentations provided by lecturer after each class. On-line consulations with the lecturer during the whole semester.
